MANHATTAN (CN) – The former executive director of the Community for Education Foundation defrauded the charity of more than $91,000, federal prosecutors say. The New York-based charity, which provides curriculum and training for public schools nationwide, fired Thomas M. Kelly on March 31.
Prosecutors say Kelly set up a Downtown Jersey City Scholarship Fund (DJCSF), falsely claimed it was affiliated with his employer, and diverted $52,481 into it.
He diverted another $44,100 paid by a school district outside of New York into the DJCSF, prosecutors say.
Kelley, 51, of Jersey City, allegedly took $46,500 for himself and wrote a check for $45,000 to “an acquaintance.”
Kelley faces up to 40 years in prison if convicted.
