(CN) - Saudi Arabia on Friday night confirmed for the first time that Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi died after entering the the kingdom's consulate in Turkey nearly two weeks ago.
In a statement on the kingdom's official foreign affairs ministry Twitter account, the government claimed Khashoggi's death occurred after he got in a "fist fight" with as many as 18 Saudi nationals inside.
Khashoggi was last seen on Oct. 2.
In making the announcement, the ministry said Saudi Arabia's King Salman has also ordered a committee of top government agencies to further investigate what happened to Khashoggi and to issue a full report on the subject within a month.
