Sanders to Lay Off Staff, Make Stand in Calif.

(CN) - Sen. Bernie Sanders said Wednesday that he will lay off hundreds of campaign staff across the country and focus the remainder of his campaign efforts on winning in California.

Sanders announced his plans in a series of interviews on Wednesday, a day after losing four out of five primary contests to Hillary Clinton on Tuesday.

Californina votes on June 7, along with Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota. The Vermont senator said while his campaign is downsizing, he is committed to remaining in the race through the party's convention this summer in Philadelphia.

Sanders said the trimming merely reflects the reality that most of the primaries and caucuses are over and staff simply isn't needed in the 40 states where voters have already had their say.

"What we are going to do is allocate our resources to the 14 contests that reamin, and that means that we are going to be cutting back on staff," he said.

Sanders also said he plans to move a large number of the staff that remains to California, where he is planning to hold a series of rallies across the state.
