San Francisco Federal Court Gets a New Judge

SAN FRANCISCO (CN) - William H. Orrick III has taken the seat on the Northern District of California Federal Court vacated by Charles Breyer, who has assumed senior status.

Orrick has worked in the Department of Justice's Civil Division since 2009, most recently as deputy assistant attorney general supervising immigration litigation.

A graduate of Yale and the Boston College Law School, Orrick began his legal career as an attorney for Georgia Legal Services in Savannah, from 1979 to 1984.

He was a partner with Coblentz Patch Duffy & Bass in San Francisco, where he practiced civil litigation from 1984 to 2009 and for the past 10 months while he awaited confirmation. His father was a member of the San Francisco federal bench from 1974 to 2001.
