JOLIET, Ill. (CN) - A salmonella outbreak at Illinois Subway restaurants has sickened 90 people in 28 counties, according to a woman who says she was hospitalized with the disease. "Very likely, the actual number of victims of the Subway Salmonella outbreak is much larger than 90," according to the complaint.
Alicea Bush-Bailey says she spent a night in the hospital after eating at a Subway outlet in Aurora.
The state Department of Health issued an alert in early June, when 34 people had been affected in 14 counties, according to the complaint in Will County Court. By June 18, the Department of Health had confirmed 90 victims in 28 counties, she says.
"Very likely, the actual number of victims of the Subway Salmonella outbreak is much larger than 90. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that in any Salmonella outbreak the actual number of victims is as many as 38 times the number of reported, confirmed cases," according to the complaint.
Bush-Bailey says she got sick in May and was hospitalized, given intravenous fluids and medicine for pain and nausea, and missed work.
She demands damages from the Aurora Subway Restaurant and its franchisor, Doctor's Associates.
Her attorney is Gary Newland of Arlington Heights.
