SACRAMENTO, Calif. (CN) - After nearly five years with the Sacramento County Superior Court, Judge Kevin Culhane was elected to assistant presiding judge.
The bench elected Culhane to the position Thursday, according to a statement.
His term will commence on Jan. 1, 2014 - the same date that the newly elected presiding judge, Robert Hight, begins his term. Culhane will serve as acting presiding judge in Hight's absence. His term ends on Dec. 31, 2015.
An elected Sacramento judge since November 2008, Culhane currently presides over a general trial department. His earlier assignments were spent in Civil Trials, Civil Law and Motion, and Family Law.
He previously was a partner at Hansen, Culhane, Kohls, Jones & Sommer and at Hansen, Boyd, Culhane & Watson.
The court noted that Culhane has also taught law at the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law, for the last 36 years.
He obtained his law degree "with great distinction" from that school in 1976 and received his master of laws degree the next year from Stanford University Law School.
