(CN) - The bill before the South Carolina legislature would require men to wait 24 hours before they can obtain Viagra or similar drugs and also require them to obtain a notarized statement from their partner before the drug can be picked up at a pharmacy.
Democratic state Rep. Mia McLeod proposed the bill in protest of her mostly male and mostly Republican colleagues' repeated attempts to place restrictions on abortions.
"Government has no place making a decision for people when it comes to abortion or erectile dysfunction," McLeod told the Associated Press on Wednesday.
McLeod said she decided to write the bill after Republicans in the South Carolina General Assembly pushed for a legislative investigation of Planned Parenthood.
A House subcommittee comprised entirely of Democrats passed the bill, but Republicans lawmakers said the bill will go nowhere.
