MIAMI (CN) - Two professional politicians will compete in a June 28 runoff for mayor of Miami after no one secured a majority in a crowded field in a special recall election Tuesday. Former 2 Live Crew frontman Luther Campbell placed fourth, with 11 percent of the votes.
Hialeah Mayor Julio Robaina led the field, with 62,829 votes - 34 percent of the votes cast Tuesday, and former Dade County Commissioner Carlos Gimenez came in second with 53,803, or 29 percent.
A candidate needed 50 percent plus one to win outright.
Campbell, whose platform included taxing strippers, took 20,652 votes.
The special election was called after 88 percent of voters chose to recall now-former Mayor Carlos Alvarez in mid-March. Billionaire car dealer and former Philadelphia Eagles owner Norman Braman bankrolled the recall after Alvarez and the City Council, facing a large budget deficit, raised property taxes and gave raises to county employees.
