Ruling Clears Path For Destruction Of Racetrack

SAN FRANCISCO (CN) - A California appeals court has upheld a decision by San Mateo County officials to disqualify 36 signatures from a referendumto block commercial development on the 83-acre Bay Meadowsracetrack.

A group calledFriends of Bay Meadows circulated petitions to overturn approval of the county's plan to demolish the racetrack to makeroom for offices, stores, 1,250 homes and 15 acres of parkland.

On first impression, the court ruled that the officials properly disqualified the signatures because the voters did not personally write out their identifying information as required by the Elections Code. See ruling.
