WASHINGTON (CN) - The Interior Department's Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement plans to revise its regulations on the conduct of mining activities in or near streams.
The agency has determined that it must revise last December's amendments of the stream buffer zone rule for surface mining, to implement the Obama Administration's interagency action plan.
The President's plan was developed to reduce the harmful environmental consequences of surface coal mining operations in Appalachia. The mining office has published a notice describing the alternatives it is considering for the rule. It seeks comment on the alternatives, and requests help in identifying significant issues, studies, and specific alternatives it should consider in its supplemental environmental impact statement for this rulemaking initiative.
