SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (CN) – Gov. Pat Quinn vetoed a bill that would allow people to collect roadkill, with permits, and use the dead animals as they wish. The bill authorized citizens with permits to retrieve certain in-season, furry mammals killed by motorists. The people could do whatever they pleased with the dead animals, including skinning or eating them. Quinn cited safety concerns about drivers who stop to pick up the roadkill. He urged lawmakers to come up with a version that included safety measures. Supporters of the bill claimed it will save the state money because it would need fewer employees for roadkill cleanup.
