HOUSTON (CN) - The Aug. 4 explosion at Valero Energy's oil refinery in Houston exposed nearby residents to toxic fumes, causing difficulty breathing, coughing and other symptoms, according to a lawsuit in Harris County Court.
Alejandre and Elizabeth Salgado and neighbor Martin Delarosa say they were affected by the explosion at the Valero refinery, which is about 100 yards from their homes.
The explosion allegedly occurred in or near a large tank of sulphur, causing sulphur and other toxic fumes to be released into the air near the Houston refinery.
The plaintiffs complained of respiratory problems, loss of sensation in their lips, burning eyes, coughing and wheezing.
They also say the nearby "nuisance" lowers the value of their homes.
