Repubs Send Climate Change Letter to UN

WASHINGTON (CN) - Twenty-eight Republicans sent a letter to the United Nations on Thursday, calling for an independent investigation into "Climate-gate," where leaked emails, they say, raise questions over the scientific validity of the theory that the planet is heating up.

In noting the Copenhagen meeting, where global leaders are hammering out agreements to combat carbon emissions, the Republicans write, "We should be able to agree that any such policies proposed rest on an accurate, credible, and objective scientific foundation."

Some have used the leaked emails - which are claimed to show that scientists have misconstrued data in making a case for climate change - to point to a broader conspiracy among scientists.

The United Nations has already said it will assign the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to look into the issue, but the group is now calling for a rare investigation, fully independent of the United Nations.

Many say that given the solid scientific consensus that climate change is occurring, any investigation into the emails of select scientists will not challenge the international momentum towards addressing the issue.

The international body announced two days earlier that the last ten years constitute the hottest decade on record, and many of its members, convinced of the threat, have called for strong action in combating climate change.
