Republican Club Accused of Racial Bias

WASHINGTON (CN) – A longtime manager for the National Republican Club of Capitol Hill, who is black, claims the club denied her pay raises despite her 80-hour work weeks, while giving “substantial raises” to white workers with less seniority, and fired her for validating another employee’s complaint of racial discrimination.

Kim Crawford sued the national social club for Republicans in Federal Court for retaliation and discrimination. Crawford says she worked for the club for more than 10 years, as assistant comptroller and as manager of human resources.
During that time, she says, she was denied two pay raises while the club gave raises to “similarly situated but less qualified and deserving Caucasian and male employees.”
The National Republican Club of Capitol Hill “is a national social club for Republicans … just one block from the U.S. Capitol.”
Crawford claims that co-defendant Stanley Lawson, the club’s general manager, “often cut corners and disregarded company rules and protocol, especially in the area of the hiring of personnel.”
She says the discrimination complaint that cost her her job was filed by a black interim executive chef named Trevor Burt who “did not receive a competitive salary.”
“That National Republican Club and Lawson fired plaintiff because plaintiff investigated the racial discrimination complaint by Burt against Lawson and communicated her findings to her superiors, resulting in the comptroller speaking to defendant Lawson about plaintiff’s findings of discrimination,” according to the complaint.
Crawford says she was promptly replaced by a white man.
She says that “as manager of human resources, plaintiff worked over 80 hours a week, responsible for over 80 employees, and never receiving less than a satisfactory performance appraisal and never suffering any disciplinary action,” and that when she asked for a raise on July 1 this year, she “had not received a pay increase in 8 years.”
She demands compensatory and punitive damages for discrimination, retaliation and civil rights violations.
She is represented by Jimmy Bell of Bowie, Md.
