Report: Mueller Subpoenaed Trump Organization for Documents

Special Counsel Robert Mueller has subpoenaed the Trump Organization demanding it turn over documents related to President Trump's businesses and Russia, the New York Times reported Thursday afternoon.

(CN) - Special Counsel Robert Mueller has subpoenaed the Trump Organization demanding it turn over documents related to President Trump's businesses and Russia, the New York Times reported Thursday afternoon.

The reporting by Maggie Haberman and Michael Schmidt is based on anonymous sources said to have been "briefed on the matter."

They concede the breadth of the subpoena, which was delivered in the past few weeks, is still unknown. Also unknown is why Mueller felt compelled to issue it rather than ask the company to hand over the documents.

The Trump Organization oversees the Trump family's far-flung business interests. The reports mark the first known time that Mueller has demanded documents related to Trump's businesses.

The president has said he would view any investigation of his or his family's personal finances as a "violation" by Mueller that crosses a red line.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders declined to comment on the subpoena, reiterating the administration's position that there was "no collusion" between the Trump campaign and Russia and referring further questions to the Trump Organization.

Alan Futerfas, an attorney for the Trump Organization, said in a statement that Thursday's reports are "old news and our assistance and cooperation with the various investigations remains the same today."

The latest development in the investigation comes as the Pew Research Center announced that a new national survey shows the public continues to express at least some confidence that Mueller is conducting a fair investigation.

A majority of Americans  -- 61 percent -- told Pew researchers this week that they are very or somewhat confident Mueller will conduct a fair investigation; these views have changed only modestly since December.

While opinions about Mueller’s probe – and other issues related to Russia’s alleged election meddling – are divided along partisan lines, 46 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents are very or somewhat confident Mueller will conduct a fair investigation.

Seventy-five percent of Democrats and Democratic leaners told researchers they are overwhelmingly confident Mueller’s investigation will be fair.

The same survey founds that four-in-10 Americans are very or somewhat confident that the administration will make a serious effort to thwart Russian efforts to influence future elections.

Meanwhile, the survey found that Trump’s job approval has changed little in recent months. Currently, 39 percent of Americans say they approve of the way Trump is handling his job as president, while 54 percent disapprove.
