Religious School Worker Indicted

ST. LOUIS (CN) - The former head of technology for the St. Louis Province of the School Sisters of Notre Dame embezzled more than $500,000 between 2000 and 2007, according to a federal grand jury indictment.

Paul Steven Murphy, 44, of St. Louis, was indicted on seven counts of mail fraud and five counts of tax evasion.

Prosecutors say Murphy used fake invoices for services that were never performed to bilk the organization of $510,000.

Murphy also is accused of failing to report more than $112,000 on tax returns from 2003 through 2007.

Each mail fraud charge is punishable by up to 20 years in prison and each tax charge by up to 5 years in prison.
