Recreational Pot Hits|Oregon Shelves Oct. 1

PORTLAND, Ore. (CN) - Oregon Gov. Kate Brown signed legislation to launch the sale of recreational marijuana beginning Oct. 1.

The use of pot recreationally has been legal in Oregon since July 1, but there was no mechanism for the legal sale of the drug. Medical marijuana has been legal in the Beaver State since 1998.

Senate Bill 460 will allow adults 21 and over to buy up to one quarter-ounce of dried marijuana flowers per day at medical-marijuana dispensaries. Adults can also buy seeds and grow up to four plants per household.

Taxes on the drug won't kick in until Jan. 4. At that point, a 25 percent sales tax will apply to all sales of recreational marijuana.

Eventually, the Oregon Liquor Control Commission will license recreational-marijuana shops. That shift is slated for late 2016.

Brown's office declined to comment on the bill.
