Records Demanded On FBI Data Mining|Program On 130,000 Immigrants

MANHATTAN (CN) - In the run-up to the Iraq war, the FBI secretly collected information on more than 130,000 immigrants and authorized the indefinite detention of immigrants from some countries, the New York Civil Liberties Union claims in suing the Justice Department in Federal Court. The NYCLU demands documents on the FBI's "Operation Darkening Clouds," and asks the court to order the FBI to acknowledge the existence of the program.

The FBI's admits that its data mining program obtained more than 130,000 records, which the FBI used as the "cornerstone" for Operation Darkening Clouds and Operation Liberty Shield, the NYCLU says. Operation Liberty Shield authorized the indefinite detention of immigrants from certain countries.
