Recognition for Duwamish tribe

SEATTLE — A federal court in Washington granted the Department of Interior’s motion to voluntarily remand, for further administrative proceedings, the Duwamish tribe’s application for federal recognition that was previously denied. The tribe worries that the remand is an empty gesture, but the court disagrees, noting that just because the department has not confessed to an error does not mean the department’s promise to reconsider the application with an opportunity to provide new evidence was made in bad faith.
