‘Real Love’ copyright claim rejected

NEW YORK — A copyright lawsuit against Universal Music Publishing Inc. over Mary J. Blige’s 1992 song “Real Love” was thrown out by a federal judge who said that Blige’s hit was not sufficiently similar to the Honey Drippers’ 1973 funk song, “Impeach the President.” The songs simply “do not sound the same,” the judge said, rejecting TufAmerica Inc.’s contention that the two tracks share similar drum sounds.
