Rare Tornado Rips |Broward County, Fla.

(CN) - An EF-1 tornado ripped through parts of Broward County Wednesday, flipping cars, damaging property and uprooting trees, the National Weather Service said.

Several cars were thrown from a parking lot into the Heath Sciences Building at the Broward College - North Campus. The tornado, with estimated winds of 90 to 100 miles per hour, flipped a Coconut Creek community bus as it crossed Coconut Creek Parkway to the Florida Turnpike, resulting in one injury.

Gaining more strength, it moved north to Wynmoor Village condominium complex where it snapped light poles, damaged fences and uprooted trees. Several condominium units suffered damage, ripping concrete and roofing materials off and throwing them onto the vehicles below.

The tornado then crossed the Florida Turnpike near the entrance and exit ramps at mile marker 67, tossing several cars and lifting one from the southbound to the northbound lanes, causing a minor injury. A tractor trailer fell victim to the winds next, and was flipped on the southbound off ramp.

The tornado weakened as it traveled to the east side of the turnpike, breaking tree limbs and causing roof damage to a homeless assistance center.

Near the end of its path, it flipped a tractor trailer at the Whole Foods warehouse at 19th Street and Blout Road. It traveled northeast and caused minor damage before lifting back up into the clouds near Copans Road and Northwest 25th Street.
