NEW BERN, N.C. — A federal court in North Carolina denied a former sheriff’s motion to dismiss discrimination claims that a former captain brought against him after the captain was demoted soon after his election to office. The captain, who was the only Black woman on staff at the time, successfully showed that she was fired for merely pretextual reasons despite her excellent performance since her 1998 hiring. The former sheriff also had demoted and fired all other Black staff, and was recorded saying “I’m sick of these Black bastards” among other derogatory things.
