MANHATTAN (CN) - A 68-year-old Queens man faces state charges of practicing law without a license and selling a forged Social Security card for an immigrant he allegedly charged $1,300 for legal work. Robert Mangieri claimed to be a "juris doctor" and when he could not get the immigration documents he promised, he sold her a forged Social Security card instead, the District Attorney's Office said.
Mangieri used letterhead referring to himself as "Hon. Robert P. Mangieri," signed documents "the Hon. Robert Mangieri," gave his victim a business card featuring the scales of justice and identifying himself as a "Juris Doctor," and when she began to doubt him, he showed her a badge to win her trust back, District Attorney Robert Morgenthau's office said.
Mangieri faces up to 12 years in prison if convicted of all charges, which include scheming to defraud, grand larceny, criminal possession of a forged instrument and practicing or appearing as an attorney-at-law without being admitted and registered.
