WASHINGTON (CN) - Qualcomm convinced the Federal Circuit to reverse part of a jury's verdict that Qualcomm infringed on two of Broadcom's patents for chipsets used in mobile radio devices.
Judge Linn determined that the jury's infringement finding on one of the patents is supported by substantial evidence, but said the second patent is invalid.
The disputed technology is found in so-called third-generation, or 3G, baseband processor chips, which enable a cell phone's basic communication functions. Broadcom and Qualcomm's 3G chips replace older, less capable 2G chips. Broadcom's lawsuit also targeted Qualcomm's QChat software, which allows the use of "push-to-talk" technology that's similar to a walkie talkie.
