Puerto Rican Day Parade Sues La Voz Hispana

BRONX (CN) - Directors of the National Puerto Rican Day Parade claim La Voz Hispana Newspapers defamed them in articles that allegedly accused the board of misappropriating and embezzling money and referred to the children of the plaintiff's president as "little banana trees."

The complaint cites this translated excerpt from the newspaper's April 20-26, 2006 issue: "... the same as Galo the Colombian, but in another chair that's electric, which will be pushed by his Dominican first lady (with her little banana trees) and ..."

Plaintiff claim that "making reference to the ethnicity of Plaintiff Velasquez' wife and making mention to [sic] Plaintiff Velasquez' children as 'banana trees' is an attempt to mock and degraded the ethnicity of Plaintiff Velasquez' children and wife, by mentioning their Dominican heritage in an unflattering and degrading light."

The plaintiffs demand punitive damages on 28 charges, in a 104-page complaint in Bronx County Court. They are represented by Javier Solano.
