Publisher Says Illegal Copies Could Cost $135M

WASHINGTON (CN) - The publisher of Consumer Electronics Daily says Warrantech Corp. could owe as much as $135 million for copying and distributing multiple issues of its daily newsletter without permission.

In a complaint in Federal Court, publisher Warren Communications claims Warrantech copied 895 separate issues and distributed them to current and former executives. But Warrantech bought only one subscription, the plaintiff claims.

It says the defendant could have to pay up to $150,000 for each infringement. It is represented by Thomas Kirby with Wiley Rein LLP.
