PIERCY, Calif. (CN) – A passerby saw a shoe protruding through the earth near the shore of the Eel River, which appeared to be attached to a foot, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday. The sheriff’s department responded and verified that the shoe “was associated with a shallow grave that contained the skeletal remains of a human body,” the office said in a statement. The Sheriff’s Department has asked the Department of Anthropology at California State University, Chico, to assist it in recovering the remains from the grave. The Sheriff’s Office and Anthropology Department did not return calls by press time.
