Protest crackdown lawsuit proceeds

ALBANY, N.Y. — A federal court in New York permits First Amendment retaliation, excessive force and false arrest claims to proceed against a New York county sheriff and deputy sheriff for their involvement in a violent crackdown on SUNY New York Paltz student protesters who were camping in protest of Israel’s actions in the Israel-Gaza conflict. The complaint sufficiently alleges the county sheriff personally ordered officers wearing riot gear to disperse the crowd and issue arrests to stifle the protesters’ free speech rights.
