EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (CN) - An assistant state's attorney in Madison County has been fired after being charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. Thomas Nevins had been an assistant state's attorney since 1996.
Nevins, 53, of Litchfield, was arrested last week in downtown Edwardsville, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.
State's attorney Thomas Gibbons announced Nevins' dismissal in a statement on Tuesday.
"This was a very difficult decision for me, as I have known Tom for a long time and he is highly respected as a prosecutor," Gibbons said in the statement. "However, this was a necessary decision in order to maintain the high degree of professionalism and integrity that the people of Madison County deserve and have come to expect of my office."
Gibbons said the case had been turned over to the state's attorney appellate prosecutor's office for prosecution.
