Proposition 8 Trial|Set For January

(CN) - The trial challenging Proposition 8, California's voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage, begins Jan. 11, a federal judge announced.

U.S. District Court Judge Vaughn Walker will oversee the trial challenging as unconstitutional the November 2008 vote that defined marriage in California as being between a man and a woman.

Gay couples Kris Perry and Sandy Stier, of Northern California, and Paul Katami and Jeff Zarrillo, from Southern California, sued shortly after the ban passed.

They are represented by Ted Olson and David Boies, the attorneys who squared off in the Bush v. Gore election case of 2000.
