Promoters Fight Over Pro Boxer

MIAMI (CN) - A Florida boxing promoter claims in court that Top Rank interfered with its right to promote two-time Olympic gold medalist Guillermo Rigondeaux.

Caribe Promotions accuses Rigondeaux of breach of contract and Top Rank of tortious interference, in Palm Beach County Court.

Rigondeaux won two Olympic golds for Cuba, and is the WBA world super bantamweight champion, Caribe says in its complaint.

Caribe claims that in 2009 Rigondeaux gave it "sole, worldwide and exclusive rights" to promote his bouts for 3 years, with an automatic renewal for 3 more.

In 2010, Caribe says, the three parties to the complaint "entered into a co-promotional and promotional rights agreement," in a 2-year deal.

Caribe claims that when the co-promotional deal expired in July this year, Top Rank and Rigondeaux made a deal that cut out Caribe. Now Top Rank is promoting Rigondeaux's fight against Robert Marroquin, planned for Sept. 15 in Las Vegas, the complaint states.

Caribe seeks damages and an injunction preventing Rigondeaux from fighting any bouts without it, including the Marroquin fight.

Caribe is represented by Jared Lopez of Miami.
