WASHINGTON (CN) - The former human resources director of the NFL Players Association says she was constructively fired for cooperating in a Department of Labor's fraud and racketeering investigation of the NFLPA.
Mary Moran claims in Superior Court that she uncovered NFLPA President Troy Vincent's plot to unseat late executive director Eugene Upshaw by colluding with player representatives and team owners before negotiations.
She says Vincent retaliated by spreading rumors she had a sexual relationship with Upshaw, calling her a "Jezebel," and accusing her of racism, prompting bloggers around the country to make death threats against her.
"Calling a woman a Jezebel has negative meanings, including a lack of sexual morals and intentions to pull God-fearing men from a righteous path," the complaint states. "It is a derogatory term used toward Jewish women, such as Ms. Moran."
Moran also claims that her father, Congressman Jim Moran, D-Va., discovered Vincent had given false information to Congress in an effort to seize control of the Players Association.
Moran says she was demoted and denied access to the NFLPA building. She asks for $2 million in compensatory damages and $2 million in punitive damages for wrongful termination and retaliation. Moran says she was earning more than $250,000 a year, including benefits and pension contributions, with the NFLPA.
