Private Attorney Confirmed to Federal Bench

(CN) - By 95-0 vote the Senate on Wednesday confirmed Wenatchee, Wash. attorney Stanley Allen Bastian to a seat on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Washington.

Washington's Eastern District has courthouses in Spokane, Yakima and Richland.

Bastian, 56, has been managing partner at Jeffers, Danielson, Sonn & Aylward since 2012, specializing in employment law. He joined the firm in 1988.

He was an assistant city attorney and criminal prosecutor for Seattle from 1985 to 1988, a public defender in Renton, Wash., in 1984, and was in private practice in Seattle in 1983 and 1984.

Bastian was president of the Washington State Bar Association from 1007 to 2008 and chairman on the nonprofit Equal Justice Coalition of Washington from 2010 to 2013.

He got his bachelor's degree from the University of Oregon in 1980, Phi Beta Kappa, and his J.D. from the University of Washington School of Law in 1983.

The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Washington is authorized four judgeships. With Bastian's confirmation it has one vacancy. The court had 1,236 new case filings in fiscal year 2013 - 618 for each judge then on the bench.
