Prison Time For Air Ticket Trickster

HOUSTON (CN) - A San Diego man was sentenced to 33 months in prison for conspiring to defraud Continental Airlines of $1.2 million by playing tricks with its computer system.

Steven Scher, 64, must pay more than $1 million in restitution and forfeit $280,000, the U.S. Attorney's office said. He was convicted of wire fraud and conspiracy in June 2007.

Scher conspired with a Continental employee, who entered waiver codes into Continental's computer reservation system, allowing Scher to issue tickets at reduced fares, and sell them at discount prices, prosecutors said.

Scher paid his Continental co-conspirator more than $100,000 for the scheme they ran from March through June 2001, prosecutors said.
