Prison Legal News Seeks L.A. County Records

LOS ANGELES (CN) - Prison Legal News wants the sheriff and attorney for Los Angeles County to hand over all records related to tort, over-detention and civil rights claims filed against the county. The monthly magazine filed suit in Superior Court, claiming Sheriff Leroy Baca and county counsel Raymond Fortner Jr. have been unresponsive to its January 2008 request under the Public Records Act.

After Baca asked for an extension, Fortner sent a letter asserting "that it is not reasonably possible ... to search for, locate, review and copy [the records requested] within any reasonable amount of time," the lawsuit claims.

Prison Legal news allegedly offered "multiple options for producing the documents in a less burdensome fashion," but the defendants have not responded.

The 7,000-subscriber magazine seeks an injunction forcing the defendants to open up the records for immediate inspection.

It is represented by Sanford Jay Rosen with Rosen, Bien & Galvan LLP.
