WASHINGTON (CN) - Prison inmates have been threatened or assaulted by other inmates because of information in their pre-sentencing investigation reports, which they are allowed to have, or because they would not give up their reports. The Prison Bureau plans to stanch this by allowing sentenced inmates to view their reports and take notes, but not keep them.
The reports are used inside the prisons to find out who among them are snitches or gang members, and who has financial resources, plus other information.
The proposed rule would still allow pretrial inmates to possess and review their Pre-Sentence Investigation Reports, or other sentencing documents from criminal judgments, in preparation for sentencing.
