CHICAGO (CN) - A U.S. citizen who aspired to join the terrorist organization Islamic State of Iraq and Levant pleaded guilty Thursday to a federal charge.
Mohammed Hamzah Khan, 20, of Bolingbrook, Ill., has in federal custody for the past year since Chicago's Joint Terrorism Task Force arrested him on Oct. 4, 2014, at O'Hare International Airport.
The plea agreement Khan accepted Thursday notes that he started contacting members of ISIL over the Internet in February 2014, seeking help in traveling to Syria so that he could join the terrorist group.
Khan planned to do anything ISIL required of him upon his arrival in Syria, according to the plea.
Khan faces up to 15 years in prison after copping to one count of attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization.
U.S. District Judge John Tharp Jr. has not yet scheduled a sentencing hearing but will hold a status hearing on Khan's case on Dec. 3 at 11:30 a.m. Though Chicago is in the central time zone, a Justice Department handout says the hearing is at 12:30 EST.
