Prison for Abortion?

SANTA FE, N.M. (CN) - A Republican state lawmaker in New Mexico has proposed a law that would send a woman to prison for three years if she had an abortion after being raped - for "tampering with evidence."

State Rep. Cathrynn Brown, R-Carlsbad, introduced H.B. 206. It states, inter alia: "Tampering with evidence shall include procuring or facilitating an abortion, or compelling or coercing another to obtain an abortion, of a fetus that is the result of criminal sexual penetration or incest with the intent to destroy evidence of the crime."

The physician who performs the abortion could be charged criminally as well.

Brown is an attorney and a member of the state Judiciary Committee, according to her website. She was elected to her first term in 2010.
