Presidential Race Grows All the More Trashy

(CN) - The no-holds-barred, nothing-out-of-bounds war of words between Republican presidential hopefuls Donald Trump and Sen. Ted Cruz took another bizzare turn on Friday, with the candidates verbally clashing over a National Enquirer story.

On Thursday, Cruz angrily denounced Trump calling him a "sniveling coward" after the Republican frontrunner retweeted posts that mocked the appearance of Cruz's wife, Heidi, and comparing her unflatteringly to his own, former model wife, Melania.

After Cruz responded with a tyrade, Trump shot back, threatening to "spill the beans" about Heidi Cruz, although he gave no hint of the alleged secret he planned to expose.

But the nastiness between the two men reached an all new level on Friday, after the supermarket tabloid, National Enquirer, published a story claiming Cruz has had numerous extramarital affairs and five mistresses.

The two candidates are currently tied in polls in Wisconsin, which will hold its primary on April 5.

After a rally in Oshkosh, Wis. Friday, Cruz blasted "Donald Trump and his "henchmen" for planting story' while intensely denying its purported details, which he called "complete and utter lies.

Trump responded, not with Tweet, which is custom, but with a fairly lengthy statement issued through his campaign.

"I have no idea whether or not the cover story about Ted Cruz in this week's issue of the National Enquirer is true or not, but I had absolutely nothing to do with it, did not know about it, and have not, as yet, read it," Trump said.

" Likewise, I have nothing to do with the National Enquirer and unlike Lyin' Ted Cruz I do not surround myself with political hacks and henchman and then pretend total innocence," he continued.

"Ted Cruz's problem with the National Enquirer is his and his alone, and while they were right about O.J. Simpson, John Edwards, and many others, I certainly hope they are not right about Lyin' Ted Cruz. I look forward to spending the week in Wisconsin, winning the Republican nomination and ultimately the Presidency in order to Make America Great Again," Trump said.
