Postal Employee Can’t Be Barred From Mayoral Run

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (CN) - A U.S. postal employee cannot be disqualified from running for Manorhaven mayor on the grounds that he works for the government, a New York appellate division ruled.

Nicholas Capozzi sought to disqualify Michael T. Meehan, an Environment Party candidate, based on his alleged violation of the Hatch Act, a law aimed at eradicating political corruption. Capozzi said Meehan's job as a U.S. postal worker prevents him from running for public office.

Judge Mastro said Capozzi "presented no basis to disqualify Meehan," and even if he had, the fact that Meehan works for the government does not disqualify him from the race.
