WASHINGTON (CN) - There will be more than 312 million people ringing in the new year in the United States on Jan. 1, 2012, a population increase of 0.7 percent, according new projections from the U.S. Census Bureau.
This time last year, the population topped 2.25 million, a 1.3 increase from Census Day on April 1, 2010.
The bureau says there will be one birth every eight seconds in the United States next month, and one death every 12 seconds.
Net migration will also contribute one person to the U.S. population every 46 seconds in January 2012. "The combination of births, deaths and net international migration results in an increase in the total U.S. population of one person every 17 seconds," according to a statement from the bureau.
It projects a total population of 312,780,968 on Jan. 1, 2012.
