Pollution Is Getting|Worse in California

WASHINGTON (CN) – The Environmental Protection Agency has approved changes in the designation of nonattainment areas in California under the Clean Air Act, indicating that despite years of compliance efforts the ambient air quality in some parts of California continues to decline.

The San Joaquin Valley nonattainment area has been elevated from “serious” to “extreme,” the South Coast Air Basin has been raised from “severe-17” to “extreme,” and the Coachella Valley and Sacramento Metro areas are up from “serious” to “severe-15.”
Because of these declines, the agency has set a 12-month deadline for the state to submit revisions to the Sacramento Metro area part of the California State Implementation Plan to meet the additional new source review requirements for “severe-15” 8-hour ozone nonattainment areas.
