ST. LOUIS - Salisbury police Officer Bill Wright says the City fired him for refusing to comply with the mayor's order to stop arresting drunk drivers. Wright's federal complaint says the City Council fired him after complained to the Council about the mayor's request.
Mayor Joe Fehling asked Wright to "refrain from arresting individuals for whom he had probable cause were driving while intoxicated, at least upon secondary roads of the city," the suit states.
Wright claims the Oct. 7 meeting violated sunshine laws and that the Council refused to grant him an appeal. He seeks reinstatement, actual damages and $100,000 in punitive damages. He is represented by Carla Holste of Jefferson City.
Salisbury is 180 miles northwest of St. Louis.
