Polanski Granted $4.5M Bail

GENEVA (CN) - Fugitive movie director Roman Polanski was granted $4.5 million bail on Wednesday, and is expected to get house arrest at his posh Alpine chalet.

The Swiss Justice Ministry found no reason to appeal the earlier decision by the Swiss Criminal Court. The court said an alarm would sound if he leaves or takes off his monitoring bracelet.

Polanski will have to stay in Switzerland while authorities decide whether to extradite him to the United States for allegedly having sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977.

The Swiss Justice Ministry ordered Polanski arrested in September when he arrived in Zurich to receive a lifetime achievement award at a film festival.
