‘Playing doctor’ not allowed

DALLAS — A federal court in Texas vacated the Social Security Administration’s decision to deny an applicant disability benefits and ordered further administrative proceedings. The applicant complained that her administrative law judge decided to “play doctor” by making findings not supported by independent medical evidence. The court agrees that the ALJ’s failure to obtain an additional medical report prejudiced the applicant.
