WASHINGTON (CN) - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has determined that a petition submitted by the Center for Biological Diversity concerning the status of the American pika contains sufficient information to warrant an investigation into whether or not the pika should be listed as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act.
Measuring 6-8 inches in length and weighing about 6 ounces, the pika is the smallest member of the rabbit family and is native to mountainous areas of the western United States.
The USFWS is seeking comment from the public regarding the status of the American pika or any subspecies of the American pika, and any risk factors that may endanger its survival.
