Pistachios Recalled Over Link to Salmonella

(CN) - Wonderful Pistachios is recalling certain flavors and sizes of in-shell and shelled pistachios after a salmonella outbreak in nine states, the government said.

An announcement posted Thursday by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says the company believes some of its products may be linked to a Salmonella outbreak.

The recalled products include roasted no salt in-shell, salt and pepper in-shell, salted in-shell, salted shelled, sweet chili, dry roasted and salted in-shell, and dry roasted and unsalted in-shell pistachios.

The FDA has a list of product codes on its website that correspond with the recalled pistachios.

There have been 11 Salmonella infections in nine states possibly related to the recalled Wonderful Pistachios products, the company said.

Wonderful Pistachios says customers who bought recalled pistachios can get a refund by returning the product to the store they bought it from, or by mailing the package to the company.

Salmonella illnesses usually last 4 to 7 days and symptoms include diarrhea, fever and cramps, which take up to 72 hours to develop.

Children, the elderly, pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems are at the highest risk.

About 400 people die each year in the United States from salmonella infection, according to the FDA.
