Pew survey finds fewer and fewer Americans think Trump 'keeps his promises'

The percentages of Americans who think the president is honest, mentally sharp and a good role model have all also declined.

(CN) — The share of Americans who see President Donald Trump as someone who keeps his promises has fallen dramatically since the 2024 election, a new Pew Research survey has found.

A survey of 5,103 U.S. adults found that only 38% think Trump “keeps his promises” — a notable drop from the 51% who said the same in November 2024. The survey also found declines in the number of Americans who see Trump as “honest” (42% to 34%), “mentally sharp” (55% to 44%) or “a good role model” (34% to 26%).

A majority of Americans — 64% — think Trump “stands up for what he believes in.” But that number is also down, falling from 68% in August.

The survey was conducted April 24 to 26. Most interviews were conducted prior to the April 25 shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner.

“Americans’ assessments of President Donald Trump have declined steadily over the last several months,” Pew researchers wrote in a report on the survey’s results. “His job approval rating now stands at 34% — the lowest mark of his second term. He has also lost ground across a variety of personal attributes and issue areas.”

Among the issues surveyed, only 41% of Americans said they are very or somewhat confident that Trump can make good decisions about immigration policy, compared to 46% in August and 53% shortly after his reelection.

Just 38% said they are confident Trump can use military force wisely, down from 46% last summer. Meanwhile, 42% percent have confidence in Trump’s ability to make good decisions on economic policy, compared to 44% in August.

A majority of Americans — 56% — say ethics and honesty have worsened in the federal government during Trump’s second term.

Only 19% feel they have improved. In the first two weeks of Trump’s second term, 47% thought ethics and honesty would worsen during Trump’s presidency, while 31% expected them to improve.

The survey also analyzed how people who voted for Trump in 2024 now view him. Seventy-eight percent of Trump voters currently approve of the way Trump is handling his job as president, down from 83% in January and 95% shortly after he took office.

“Trump’s younger and Hispanic voters are now substantially less likely than his older and white voters to approve of his job performance,” the researchers noted.

Trump’s approval rating has also declined among those who did not vote at all in 2024, from 45% in early 2025 and 30% in January to 26% in this recent poll.

Asked for a comment on the survey, a White House spokesperson said: “The ultimate poll was Nov. 5, 2024, when nearly 80 million Americans overwhelmingly elected President Trump to deliver on his popular and commonsense agenda.”

“No other President in history has accomplished more for the American people than President Trump, who is working tirelessly to create jobs, cool inflation, increase housing affordability and more,” the spokesperson continued. “The President has already made historic progress not only in America but around the world. And this is just the beginning, as his agenda continues taking effect.”
