Pet Store Says Group’s ‘Puppy Mill’|Allegations Are a Scam to Raise Money

MANHATTAN (CN) - A pet store claims Best Friends Animal Society defamed it as a "puppy mill," an allegation that was published in the New York Daily News. Kennel Delites dba American Kennels denies the allegations, saying it buys animals only from reputable breeders, and that "defendant's entire campaign is a scam designed to raise money for the defendants".

American Kennels claims the Utah-based defendant organized protests in front of its Lexington Avenue store on two days in April, making false allegations that it was "selling sick, unhealthy dogs, raised in overcrowded and unsafe conditions in puppy mills." It claims the allegations were published in the Daily News on April 26, and was repeated on the TV Network New York One. And it claims the defamatory allegations were repeated in flyers that protesters handed out in front of the store.

American Kennels claims that "defendant's entire campaign is a scam designed to raise money for the defendants and the welfare of the puppies is not the primary concern of the defendants."

American Kennels demands $10 million. It is represented in New York County Court by William Unroch.
