Pet Flea Collars Called Carcinogenic

SAN FRANCISCO (CN) - Retailers do not inform the public that flea-and-tick collars for pets contain propoxur, a carbamate insecticide that can cause cancer in humans, the National Resources Defense Council claims in Federal Court. Defendants include Albertsons, Petco and Petsmart.

The flea collars are sold under a welter of names, including Sergeant's Dual Action Flea & Tick Collar for Large Dogs, Adams Flea & Tick Collars, Bio-Spot Flea & Tick Collar, Zodiac Fleatrol, and under other names. The NRDC says humans may ingest the chemical through hand-to-mouth contact.

Named as defendants are Albertsons, Central Garden & Pet Co., Drs. Foster & Smith Inc., Farnam Cos., Jeffers Inc., KV Vet Supply Co., Orchard Supply Hardware Stores Corp., Pet Club Stores, Pet Food Express Ltd., Petco Animal Supplies, Petsmart, Petstore.com Corp., Ralphs Grocery Co., Sergeant's Pet Care Products, Virbac Inc., and Wellmark International Corp.

The NRDC seeks civil penalties and an injunction.
